The German Research Foundation is extending its funding for a research network: The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) "Metaflammation and Cellular Programming" at the University of Bonn focuses on chronic inflammation triggered by the immune system. It cooperates with the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) and other institutions.
The CRC 1454 "Metaflammation and Cellular Programming" is already entering its second funding period. It is looking at the connection between a Western lifestyle and chronic inflammatory diseases - for example, how excessive calorie intake coupled with insufficient exercise promotes the development of cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases or metabolic syndrome.
The researchers are using a holistic approach to investigate why lifestyle or environmental factors such as obesity, smoking or insufficient exercise influence the incorrect programming of immune cells and thus cause "metaflammation" - a chronic inflammation triggered by the immune system. The researchers are investigating how cells interact in inflamed tissue and how molecular signaling pathways contribute to the development of diseases during metaflammation.
The scientific network is located in the Transdisciplinary Research Area (TRA) "Life and Health" and combines the expertise of scientists from the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Agricultural, Nutritional and Engineering Sciences as well as the Cluster of Excellence ImmunoSensation2 and the University Hospital Bonn (UKB). In addition, researchers from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn, the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research in Cologne, the German Rheumatism Research Center in Berlin and the Technical University of Braunschweig are involved.
A total of 10 working groups from the LIMES Institute are involved in the research within the framework of the CRC 1454:
