In October 2023, our students in the master's programs in "Biochemistry" and "Immunobiology: from molecules to integrative systems" experienced a special highlight: After a long break due to the pandemic, we were finally able to organize an excursion to the Bayer company site in Wuppertal. The excursion, which was organized in collaboration with the Department of Pharmacy, generated great interest among the students and the spots were quickly filled.
The trip began in the early morning hours, comfortably and collectively on the university bus. On our arrival and registration at the gate, we were warmly welcomed by Dr. Burkhardt, our local contact. He introduced us to the world of Bayer, not only telling us about the company's history but also giving us a deeper insight into its current research and development.
The tour started with an impressive live virtual tour through of the animal house, followed by insights into the synthesis and chromatography laboratories. Particularly impressive was the visit to the automated High Throughput Screening laboratory and the virtual 3D Molecular Design room, which offered us fascinating insights into the cutting-edge technologies in pharmaceutical research.
For our students the excursion was an exceptional opportunity to gain practical experience and profound insights into industrial research. The enthusiasm and positive feedback from the participants reflected the success of the excursion. It was an enriching experience that not only imparted new knowledge but also bridged the gap between academic education and industry.
We look forward to the next visit with anticipation and are convinced that such excursions contribute invaluably to the academic and personal development of our students.
