As they caused so many problems to their inquirer Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Thudichum he called them „Sphingolipids“ in commemoration of the legendary Sphinx from Greek mythology. We study the role of these enigmatic membrane lipids mainly in the brain, where they are particularly abundant.
