The immune system constantly responds to environmental challenges, not only in the context of microbial infections but also through physical or chemical stimuli. Our research group primarily investigates the differentiation and functional properties of macrophages, dendritic cells and mast cells in barrier organs, in particular the skin and the intestine. In addition, we study the cross-talk of immune cells and neurons in the central nervous system. We are especially interested in the role of chemokines in the context of cell migration and cell-cell-interaction. Furthermore, the influence of various environmental factors on the activation and metabolism of myeloid cells is analyzed using pre-clinical models of allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, type 2 diabetes, as well as bacterial and parasitic infections.
